A keeping howler from Malawi’s Sanudi saw the goalie scuff a clearance to Freddie Kanoute who volleyed home from 35-yards. That goal was then bettered by Seydou Kieta who thumped an unbelievable free-kick from distance past Sanudi to double the lead. Russel Mwafulirwa reduced the deficit for Malawi just before the hour, bur Mali ran out comfortable, but eventually unsuccessful, winners when Mamadou Bagayoko netted a third five minutes from time.
